From late XIX century and until now, the Cuban theater
has been one of the most transcendental art manifestations
and center of attention given the variety of its proposals
and the complexity of the issues it presents.
A glance at Cuban theater will show you the technical
preparation of its performers and young graduates of the
art school. The border line between the old and new theater
seem to have been abolished or at leat weakened.
The National Council of Performing Arts has prepared
several artist groups of Folk and contemporary ballet,
pantomime, theater for children. It promotes and organizes
important national and international events and festivals.
The most significant of all is International Ballet Festival,
held every two years, always in October. Presided by prima
ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, this festival attracts
valuable companies and dancers from all over the world.
National Cuban Ballet and the National Folk Group patronize
initiation and training courses for students and dancers.
Cuballet takes place in January and August every year;
Folkcuba, in January and July; while Cubadanza, is held
in January and August.
