Cuban
plastic artists -painters, sculptors, and photographers-
are present in the main galleries of the country. Their
work has been observed, and analyzed by critics from everywhere.
Painters and sculptors started their formation in the
beginning of the XIX century, guided by the school of
European academism, thus away from the transformations
taking place all over the XIX century in the Old Continent.
The portrait, the landscape, the customs, and historical
issues received preferential attention.
Every painter learned
from his own experiences, and took the one they consider
most important. With their work, they set trends and premises,
valuable for the upcoming generations, beyond the artistic
trends and other circumstances.
Today, we see a pictorial
attitude, with flashbacks to the past, not as a shelter,
but as a worthy rescue to create Works with new meanings
and senses.
Cuban plastic of
today has humorous brushstrokes, post medieval figurations
and traits of magic imagery evidencing a symbiosis of ancient
cultures.
The Cuban Fund of Cultural Goods promotes commercially the
most authentic plastic and manual creations of the country.
The offers outstand for a varied range of products covering
exclusive works of art and original craftsmanship and more
specialized pieces.
Concerning the event
on plastic arts convened in the island, we have the International
Fair of Handicraft (FIART) (Havana) programmed for the years
2003 and 2005, in February; and the Biennial of Havana,
gathering of the visual arts in November.
This year we’re
celebrating the centennials of two important painters, Marcelo
Pogolotti and Wilfredo Lam. As a tribute to them, two great
exhibitions will be presented in the Cuban Museum of Fine
Arts.
