Havana
(La Habana) is the capitol city of Cuba. With a population
of over 2 million it is the largest city in the Caribbean.
The
city was founded in 1519. With It’s important location
in the Caribbean and natural harbour, Havana became the
meeting place for the Spanish fleets transporting all the
wealth extracted from their domains in the New World. It
also became the centre of trade and communications between
the region and the Old Continent.
Havana
has it all. The city never sleeps and you never run out
of things to do or see. Havana has lots of nightlife with
many discotheques, bares, cabaret, restaurants. For the
sightseeing, there is many historical places to see, the
beautiful old Spanish buildings, the malecón, Havana's
different districts, the museums, houses of Asia, Africa,
Puerto Rico, Arabs (with the only hall for Muslim prayers
in Cuba).
The
atmosphere in Havana is very warm and very busy, just
walking in Havana is an exciting experience. Unlike many
other cities in Cuba, Havana is very modern, though still
having all the charm of the Cuban people.
Malecón.
The great seawall, the Malecón is an outstanding
place to visit for its views and culture. This is the meeting
place for all the people of the city when the night falls.
There is seven fortresses and towers with a great wall to
connect them all, and it shows the wealth, that this city
ones have had.
La
Habana Vieja (Old Havana) The area around the port
is today known as La Habana Vieja. This very popular tourist
destination is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
and you will best enjoy the area on foot. There is many
people working on getting Havana preserved and rest orated,
specially the old part of Havana (La Habana Vieja), which
is the heart and soul of Havana, It was declared a Heritage
of Mankind Site in 1982 by UNESCO. trying to preserve the
beauty of its architecture and promote the historical importance
of its role within the region.
Places
to visit in Habana Vieja: Plaza de Armas, It is the first
public square built in the city.
Plaza
de la Cathedral, which is one of the most beautiful squares
in the Caribbean, with the finest baroque architecture in
the country.
El
Templete, small temple where the first Mass was said in
1519.
Castillo
de la Real Fuerza, which is one of the oldest forts in the
Americas, it has now modern art exhibitions and there is
a good view over the harbour.
Palacio
de los Capitanes Generales, former the government building
and the governors residence, and now the Museo de la Ciudad
de la Habana.
Museo
de Arte Colonial, a palace constructed in 1720, with a large
collection of the 17th and 18th century furniture.
Calle
Obispo one of Old Havana's most important streets to see.
Centro
Habana (Central Havana) Centro Habana is beside Habana Vieja,
the most populated and overcrowded part of the city. It
is a residential and commercial area, with the main shopping
street of the city.
Places
to visit in Central Havana: The Partagas tobacco factory,
just behind the Capitolio, it is the biggest export factory
in the country, making more then 5 million cigars every
year.
Capitolio
with a lot of history inside and the other buildings in
Central Havana, which have the mix of different building
architecture.
Vedado
The area of Vedado mainly holds offices and hotels, the
business center is on La Rampa.
Places
to visit in Vedado: Museo Napoleonico, with a remarkable
collection of Napoleonic memorabilia.
Cementerio
de Cristobal Colon, and historical cemetery.
Miramar
The area of Miramar holds some of the most expensive hotels
and restaurants in Havana and almost all the foreign embassies
are located here. The area is also known for it's big mansions
and houses where the upper-class live.

to visit in Miramar: Museo del Ministerio del Interior,
where you can see the history of the cold war. |
